Nuclear engineer Williams Jacobs Jr. is scheduled to testify Tuesday about the construction of Plant Vogtle (VOH'-gohl) near Augusta. Jacobs is monitoring construction of the $14 billion facility for the state's Public Service Commission, which regulates utilities.
The first reactor was supposed to be finished on April 1, 2016, with the second reactor following a year later. In his latest report, Jacobs said the first reactor will probably be ready no sooner than June 2017. He said the cost of a one-year delay is in the range of hundreds of millions of dollars.
Southern Co. officials say they are still in talks with their contractors about the building schedule.
