GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Authorities in Hall County say former jailer has been charged with using excessive force in a Sept. 8 incident.

The Times of Gainesville reports Dustin Charlton punched an unruly inmate in his head after the inmate was under control and in handcuffs.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the sheriff's office probed the incident and Charlton was fired on Sept. 12.

The newspaper reports Charlton was also investigated and suspended for five days in 2010 for hitting an inmate during a melee at the jail.

Charlton was released on $15,000 bond Thursday.
