With two players scoring new season highs in points, the Lady Hawks’ basketball team made quick work of the Ursuline Arrows, 58-37, in the St. Leo Classic.

Kristin Nash set a new high for points in a game as a member of the Lady Hawks scoring a game-high 18 points, while Shelby Farrer bested her previous season high by scoring 15 points.

The first half opened up looking like the game would be played close, with Ursuline clinging to the 13-12 lead with 9:32 remaining in the first half.

That is when Shorter (5-4) went on a run to push the halftime lead to 25-18. The half was aided by 14 Ursuline turnovers, helping to offset the 29 percent shooting from the field for the Lady Hawks.

Nash would score the first six points for the Lady Hawks to start the second half. Ursuline would take advantage of a seven minute long 15-6 run to narrow the gap to 39-34. But Ursuline went cold after Darria Baker hit s 3-pointer with 6:58 remaining in the game, as they would not score again.

Farrer would score six points in the final seven minute to help the Lady Hawks distance themselves from the Arrows.

Shorter would shoot 36 percent in the second half but took advantage of trips to the free throw line by going 8-for-8.

For the game, Shorter would score 27 points off of 28 turnovers by the Arrows. The Lady Hawks also went on to score 30 points in the paint and received 12 points from the bench.

Nash would add three rebounds and a team-high three assists, while Farrer grabbed eight rebounds and recorded three blocked shots.

Lindsey Crawford had a strong game leading the reserves with eight points and seven rebounds, while also adding three blocks.

Laura Campbell led the way for Ursuline, scoring 13 points. Dee Erazo scored 12 points and recorded the game high 14 rebounds.

DALLAS MEN 79, BERRY 66

Freshman Devan Bruce scored a game-best 17 points, but Berry College lost to the University of Dallas, 79-66, on Sunday at The Cage Center.

Bruce was 7-14 from the field and also collected a game-high of 10 rebounds. Berry dropped to 2-8, and Dallas is now 7-3.

The Vikings, who trailed 41-33 at halftime, had four players score in double figures. Jonathan Abrams had 15, Mac Whalen netted 14, and Lake Graham added 10 for the home team.

The visitors had the largest lead at 55-38 with 11:53 left after a 3-pointer by Blaine Blackburn.

The Vikings, however, went on a 23-9 run to pull within three points — 64-61 with 5:51 remaining — after Graham made a jumper. Berry could not get any closer.

Dallas out-shot BC 47 to 44 percent in the contest.

The Crusaders stroked nine 3-pointers to four for the Vikings. Dallas had 42 rebounds to 31 for Berry. The visitors led in offensive rebounds, 15-6.

“I’ve said this before, but we need to get better on the boards,” said Berry Head Coach Jeff Haarlow.

“We need to limit offensive rebounds, and our perimeter defense must improve.”

Dallas also had four players in double digits. Aaron Wyatt and Tanner Buffrey led the way with 16 and 15 points respectively.

GHC WOMEN 81, GADSDEN STATE 62

Seandre Lee led all scorers with 23 points, followed by Gabriele Kendell’s 16 points and 15 rebounds to lead the No. 7-ranked Georgia Highlands Lady Chargers to an 81-62 victory against Gadsden State in the South Georgia Tech Classic tournament in Americus.

After a close first half, the Lady Chargers pulled away for their 16th straight win to remain undefeated in their first game back after the holiday break.
