The first six to seven months of 2012, there were many accidents/wrecks involving motorcycles. I don’t know what the statistics are, for the state of Georgia, concerning the number of motorcycle accidents, but I do personally know of seven to eight wrecks that occurred locally, two of them were fatalities. There are so many risks involved when a rider takes their bike out for a ride. A motorcycle doesn’t have the safety and protection of a steel frame surrounding its rider, there are no air bags or seat belts or anything else to buffer them during a wreck or a fall from their bikes. All there is, between a rider and the surface of the road, is their helmets and the clothes on their back.
Most people say “A wreck is a wreck, no matter what type of vehicle you are in at the time and it is a terrible thing to have happen to you.” It is different for a motorcyclist because for them it is a nightmare becoming a reality. There are numerous injuries that can come from such an accident. They range from having scrapes and bruises, road rash and broken bones to internal injuries and bleeding, head injuries (concussion, amnesia, etc.), paralysis, loss of limbs and even death.
These accidents can be caused by the negligence of a careless driver who is distracted by a cell phone, a car load of screaming kids or even from playing their stereos in their cars way to loud. They can also, be nobody’s fault at all and just be an unforeseen accident, such as a tire blowing out, sliding and losing control of the bike due to bad weather conditions and any number of similar occurrences.
I am writing this with the hope that my words will be read by someone who can help to make a huge difference and can raise Motorcycle Safety and Awareness and spread the message far and wide.
We can all make a difference and can prevent these things from happening by being more vigilant and aware of the other drivers sharing the roads with us.
