Few local candidates who ran for office in 2012 made the Dec. 31 deadline to file their final campaign finance reports, but they have through 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 8 before they’re socked with an automatic $125 late fee.

Floyd County voters decided races in July and November last year, including two County Commission special elections in the summer.

Larry Maxey beat out Jerry Lee for the vacant Post 4 County Commission seat, 5,829 - 4,480.

Maxey reported spending $9,560.90 on his race — equal to $1.64 per vote. He ended the year with a balance of $10.18 in his campaign chest.

Major donors to his campaign included Amy Doyle of Rome, who chipped in $1,700, and Rome realtor Jackson Morgan, who gave $1,000. Dr. Kenn Griffith, Superior Court Judge Jack Niedrach, Garden Lakes Realty, Wright’s Grading Inc. and Etowah Innovations Inc. were among the donors who contributed lesser amounts.

Lee closed out his campaign fund with a zero balance. He spent the equivalent of $2.04 per vote — a total of $9,139.72, including an unreimbursed personal loan of $3,679.72.

The Chad Whitefield for State Senate campaign contributed $1,000 to Lee’s race. Other donors included Tax Commissioner Kevin Payne, Cartersville-based Peachtree Planning owner Gene Lee, local pharmacist Keith Winslette and Alabama attorney Charlie Waldrep.

Reports were still pending at 5 p.m. Wednesday from the two candidates for the County Commission Post 1 special election, Rhonda Wallace, who won the seat, and Nathan Roberts.

The July primary elections made Chuck Hufstetler the sole general election candidate for the state Senate District 52 seat he’ll assume on Jan. 14.

Vying with him for the Republican nomination were David Doss and Hayden Collins. Doss is the only one of the three who has filed his year-end report so far.

A number of unopposed candidates were returned to office last year.

Probate Court Judge Steve Burkhalter reported $2,980.74 in contributions, mainly from local attorneys and law firms, and $2,786.75 in expenses that included his $2,034 qualifying fee. He has a cash balance of $193.99.

Floyd County School Board members Brian Barcomb and George Bevels, along with County Coroner Barry Henderson, reported no contributions, no expenses and no cash on hand.

Incumbent state House Rep. Christian Coomer, R-Cartersville, reported contributions of $14,655.11 and expenses totaling $6,117.54, leaving him with $8,537.57 in his campaign account.

The bulk of his funding came from political action committees for the legal, medical, dental and optometry industries, utilities and Walmart. His expenses included contributions to other Republicans and a number of charitable donations to organizations including Toys for Tots, Patriot Guard Riders and Vietnam Veterans of Bartow County.

In contested races, Floyd County Sheriff Tim Burkhalter and Clerk of Courts Barbara Penson have filed, but reports from their challengers Cary Cooper and Mark McAllister are still pending.
