ATLANTA (AP) — An Atlanta police officer was seriously injured when his car was struck by a motorist accused of driving drunk.

Police Officer Osbert Beckles was being treated Saturday at Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition. He was expected to survive.

WSB-TV reports that the accident happened around 11:30 p.m. Friday while Beckles was working traffic near a ramp for Interstate 75. A 2011 Hyundai Sonata slammed into the officer's car.

Investigators accuse the driver, 45-year-old Scott Eugene Welker, of trying to flee from the scene. He has been charged with driving under the influence and was being held at the Fulton County Jail.

It was not clear Saturday whether Welker had an attorney.
