ATLANTA (AP) — A 12-year-old basketball player from Buford who collapsed at a game and died is being remembered by coaches as a great kid.

Coach Byron Larrieu said seventh-grader Jeremy Nelson was pulled from the Gwinnett Basketball League all-star game Saturday night to get some rest and a few seconds later he began having problems. He was rushed to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he died.

Larrieu told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the 6-foot-4 player was "a phenomenal kid with a great sense of humor." Former coach DeMarcus Irons said Nelson represented everything good about kids in the league.

Schools Superintendent Geye Hamby said Nelson was an excellent student athlete at Buford Middle School and had a presence in the hallways and on the court.

I always enjoy a good diatribe from Treelicker or treluscious or whatever it is. EMT's can do what they do just like the police in Rome- talk on the phone most of their shift. These facts and figures of response time, location of gyms, fire stations, number of people on duty in gwinnett county- where is all of that info in these media reports??? and what does having a check spent on the 7th have to do with anything except signfying your low level of intelligence? my checks are usually direct deposited 3x per month. 1 is commission and buy-backs and the other 2 are pay. Agreed the donut comment is too much but I haven't seen a physically fit looking EMT in years so I made an assumption based on public safety community speaking amongst itself as to where do you get the best snacks while working. I was at the baseball game I mentioned and I am not wrong on that response time. It was swept under the Bartow rug because the EMT director is the brother of the Sheriff or something to that effect. I just feel that this kid maybe could've been saved. An ALL STAR event has multiple teams and go for full day or TWO days. Gwinnett has LOTS of EMT's and others- should've had someone there. They do for high school football and most track events. Guess I'll go spend my check now.

11alive reported this morning that he died from fluid on his lungs. It is always very sad when a young life is lost so suddenly. Prayers are with the family, friends and the personal that worked the call.

It occurred in Suwanee which is in Gwinnett County. That would be Gwinnett County Fire Station 13's area. Station 13 is equipped with a Advanced Life support engine crew with a paramedic on board and there is an ambulance stationed there as well. Within that area there are 4 ALS engines and 4 ALS ambulances within 5-7 minutes from the call location. I'm pretty sure they had ALS personnel on the scene within minutes and did their absolute best to revive this child. As you can probably tell, I am a member of the public safety community so I can assure you my information is correct. As far as donuts are concerned I'm sure I've ate on or two here or there but I can assure you it has never slowed a response. You may see us eating on duty but do you realize we work 24 hour shifts and have to perform these necessary functions while working, but I digress. Gwinnett Fire is a joint Fire and EMS service with the highest of standards and have exceptional response times. Sometimes people feel it takes a long time when it is just a few minutes when faced with emergent situations. It is not uncommon to have these types of complaints only to find afterward that the response times are much less than what people felt they were. Guess I'll go eat a donut now.

The first 911 call came at 8:57. EMTs arrived by 9:05. That is about as fast as you can get anywhere.

The loss of this child's life is a terrible tragedy.

I don't know the exact cause of death; however it is inappropriate to make condescending remarks about EMT personnel. These people are honest dedicated people as a whole and deserve our respect.

Are you certain donuts were involved? Are you sure that the ambulance in that area had not been moved to another district to either cover multiple districts due to unusually high call volume? Are you sure that the ambulance in that area was not out on another call and an out-of-district ambulance had to travel across county to get there? Are you sure that some hospital, having guaranteed itself a service district, did not cut the number of EMTs in that area once the contract was signed? Have you ever thought about what happens if there are 4 ambulances out and 3 are busy?

Are you aware that the local rec league has numerous gyms running full steam during basketball season including Anthony, Gilbreath and Thornton (spaced all over the area), how do you propose we pay for 3 ambulances to spend all of their time at gymasiums?

I sense a disdain for the fact that EMTs eat donuts or surf the web; while the 42 light-speed-traveling ambulances your world would have are assigned to every little league game in the county, what WOULD you allow the EMTs to do? Can they watch the game or do they need to be practicing CPR their entire shift?

It's only the 7th, surely your check is not already spent?

look on AJC OR WSBTV.com - the coach and the parents and dozens of witnesses ALL claim that it took approx 30 mins for any EMT's to arrive on scene. I saw a similar thing happen at an all-star baseball game in cartersville last year and a kid almost lost an eye over it when he got hit with a pitch and his socket was split open. Took the EMT's about 30 minutes to get up off the donuts and come help. WHY does any rec league NOT have on-site emergency medical help standing by eatin donuts, surfing the net on their phones in case something happens? the donut eaters can do all the same things there at the gym as they can sitting in some dark room somewhere and cut down on the 30 min response time.
