Rome-based Big Time Products is centralizing all of its warehousing operations in the remaining half of the old Mohawk warehouse in Shannon.

Big Time Products CEO Harry Pierce confirmed Tuesday that the company would be consolidating warehousing operations from Puerto Rico and California into the Shannon location, which includes 300,412 square feet of space.

Big Time Products, with corporate offices at 2 Wilbanks Road in Rome, is the largest glove reseller in the United States.

Pierce said the company’s goods include work gloves, kitchen gloves, paint gloves and medical gloves in more than 30,000 stores.

Northern Georgia Logistics, a subsidiary of Findlay’s Tall Timbers Distribution, occupies the other half of the building. The Ball Corp. attracted the Ohio-based company to Rome.

“We’re moving now. They’re scraping floors and we’re building displays out there now,” Pierce said. “We’re in there; now it’s just putting in wiring, building our warehouse offices and break rooms, doing construction while we’re transitioning.”

Big Time Products local warehousing has been operated out of a facility on the campus of Marglen Industries on Ward Mountain Road. “As everybody has, retailers are all getting shipped direct from their distribution centers now. You don’t need to have multiple warehouses on the west and east coast, so it was smarter to consolidate everything into one, so we’re bringing everything into Rome,” Pierce said.

Mike Burkhalter, vice president of operations, said that he thinks the new facility may employ between 60 and 80 workers.

“A lot of these will be temporary employees,” he said. “They’ll flex with the workload. If we do a promotion, we’ll bring them in for that promotion, and our promotional calendar is filled up.”

Promotional displays that go to retailers will also be built in the new warehouse. “Right now I’m looking at around 7,000 different pallet displays and quarter-pallet displays that will be going out during the first quarter,” Burkhalter said. “We’re making a huge investment back into the company. This will be a state-of-the-art facility.”

“We’re also putting in a warehouse computer system, which we’ve never had, so that’s going to help — unfortunately for people, but fortunately for us, because it supposedly cuts down on employees,” Pierce said. “This will be a lot more efficient.”

Heather Seckman, director of economic development at the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce, said that just as the old Mohawk distribution center is now full, the chamber is now marketing two former Aladdin/Mohawk buildings at 1112 Ga. 140 — one has 98,000 square feet and the other 128,000 square feet. Both haven been vacant for some time.
