No one was seriously injured Tuesday night when a car carrying a woman and her three grandsons slid down into a large ditch and landed on its top, according to Floyd County police.

Officer Josh Ward said the car was going through the parking lot at Pleasant Valley South Baptist Church on Pleasant Valley Road at about 7:30 p.m. when the driver misjudged the driveway leading to Preacher Smith Road and hit a concrete wall on the edge of an eight-foot deep ditch.

The car then slid down an embankment, flipped over and came to rest upside-down in the ditch.

With the car partially submerged because of recent rains, bystanders rushed to the scene and were able to pull out all four people.

“We had just finished basketball practice,” said Chris Giddens, children’s minister for Pleasant Valley South Baptist. He said three men, including a Rome-Floyd County fireman, were at the church when the wreck happened and helped rescue the victims.

“It was a blessing that these folks were here,” Giddens said. “It was good to see heroes doing heroic things on a rainy day.”

All four people that were in the car were taken to Floyd Medical Center for observation but were released late Tuesday night with no serious injuries.
