A Kingston man was shot and killed after threatening Gordon County Sheriff’s deputies with a rifle at a residence Wednesday on Dews Pond Road in Calhoun.

According to reports from the Gordon County Sheriff’s office:

Deputies responded to a residence on Dews Pond Road at approximately 3:50 p.m. at the request of Floyd County authorities concerning a report of an armed man threatening to kill his wife.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered the man in question in a pickup truck that had been reported stolen.

The man, later identified as Allen Eugene Ott, of Kingston, was approached by deputies and failed to obey repeated commands to put down a large caliber rifle in his possession.

Ott reportedly pointed the rifle at a deputy, who then shot him. Ott then proceeded to point his rifle at a second deputy who also shot him. Ott was removed from the scene by ambulance and later pronounced dead.

“This was an unfortunate incident where an individual threatened the deputies, placing them in fear for their lives and forced them to take action,” said Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston. “It is a reminder of the dangers in such cases that our courageous officers face everyday.”

Ralston added the two deputies who shot Ott have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into the case by the GBI, an action that is in standing with regular policy and procedure.
