His stellar career brought him back to Rome on Friday night when Darlington honored its former punter by retiring his No. 10 jersey after the Darlington girls’ game against Christian Heritage.
It was the first time a prep football player has had his jersey retired at Darlington.
“It’s a great honor. Just getting my number retired at Darlington, I know that it’s my number but it wasn’t just me that got me here,” said Powell. “I have a good core group of people who helped to get me here. Coach (Tommy) Atha helped me, coach (Jason) Turner who no longer works at Darlington. ... Greg Cater, my punting coach since junior year high school.”
Powell punted 65 times for the Buffalo Bills this season. He averaged 44 yards per punt, with a long of 62 yards.
