The University of the South defeated Berry College, 64-50, in a Southern Athletic Association game on Friday night.

Berry fell to 4-12 and 1-4. Sewanee improved to 8-5 and 1-4.

Viking senior guard Jonathan Abrams netted a team-best 12 points for BC. Teammate Mac Whalen added nine points for Berry.

In the first half, Berry held a 14-13 lead with 8:34 remaining after two free throws from Devan Bruce. The Tigers then went on an 18-6 run and held a 31-20 advantage at the break.

Brett Boudin poured in a game-high 24 points for Sewanee. He was 6-7 shooting and made six 3-pointers.

Berry struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 2-16 attempts. The Tigers connected on 8-18 treys in the contest.

The Sewanee defense held the Vikings to a season-low point total of 50.

"They played good defense on us," said Berry Head Coach Jeff Haarlow. "We had tired legs tonight and couldn't get over the hump. A bright spot for us was Jake Wright (6 points)."

The Vikings continue their SAA road trip on Sunday at Centre in Danville, Ky.

BERRY WOMEN 72, UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH 51

Chanlir Segarra and Alexa Evans combined for 35 points as Berry College won at Sewanee, 72-51, on Friday night.

The win was the fifth straight for Berry, the most since the 2007-08 season. The Vikings improved to 9-6 and 4-1. Sewanee fell to 5-8, 0-5.

Segarra notched a game-high 20 points. Evans chipped in with 15 for the visitors.

Berry held a 38-34 edge at halftime. The Vikings led the entire game, but the Tigers made a run in the second half and cut the lead to 46-43 with 9:01 left. The Vikes closed the game with a 26-8 run.

"We played hard tonight; it was a total team effort," said Berry Head Coach Stephanie Dunn. "Our bench played well tonight and gave us a lift. We feel good any time we can go on the road and win a conference game."

Jamie Chauvin came off the bench to tally 16 points for Sewanee.

"We will spend time tomorrow preparing for a good Centre team," Dunn said. "We need to play hard and smart on Sunday."

GNTC WOMEN 86 SOUTHERN CRESCENT TECH 57

Georgia Northwestern freshman forward Alyssa Nichelson (Canton, Georgia) led the way for the Lady Cats Friday night as the first-year standout racked up 19 points, six rebounds, and five steals in the 86-57 road win over Southern Crescent Tech in Griffin, Georgia.

Fellow first-year post player Terika Mostella (Cartersville, GA) would drop in a dozen points and clean the boards for 13 rebounds in Georgia Northwestern’s fourth-straight NJCAA Region XVII win. The Lady Cats (10-8, 4-0) are defending their region title of the 2011-12 season which led to a national tournament berth last March.

A noticeable absence for the Lady Cats was region-leading rebounder Odessa Person (Lineville, Alabama). The freshman forward turned her right ankle at the end of their last game versus West Georgia Tech in Rome, Georgia. She will be out for one to two weeks recovering. Person closed out her last stint on the hardwood with 17 points and 21 rebounds versus the Lady Golden Knights.

Freshman Mariah Price (Summerville, Georgia) would contribute 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in the win. Southern Crescent’s Lakeisha Anderson would lead all scorers for the Lady Tigers with 14.

Georgia Northwestern will be in action next on January 23 when the Lady Cats travel up Lookout Mountain to face-off with the Lady Scots of Covenant College in a non-region match-up.
