COLUMBIA -- While one Georgia man files suit over his right to display “GAYGUY” on his license plate, the same tag remains unclaimed in South Carolina.

That’s not to say South Carolina officials would issue it, however.

No GAYGUY plate has been assigned to a vehicle in South Carolina, said S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles spokesman Beth Parks. But as for whether someone tried and was denied, she and other agency staff said they were uncertain.

New plates, such as one touting the University of Alabama, typically must be reviewed to meet law enforcement standards of readability, she said.

As for personalized tag numbers, however, Parks said agency officials are skilled in decoding their meaning and often decipher messages that would be cryptic to others, such as “10sNe1.”

“These ladies issuing these personalize plates, they pick up on this stuff,” said Parks. “For the ones they’re unsure enough and uncomfortable with, they’ll send the plate to a committee for review.”

James Cyrus Gilbert has sued the Georgia Department of Driver Services for denying his application for the tags 4GAYLIB, GAYPWR and GAYGUY, according to the Associated Press.
