A Calhoun woman was arrested on Wednesday and charged with two counts of cruelty to children after police responded to a 911 call from a child who said he didn’t know where his parents were, The Calhoun Times reported.

Police say Laura Michelle Overfield, 25, of a Holly Hills residence, allegedly left the child, a 6-year-old, alone with an 8-month-old child for an estimated 35 minutes while she visited a neighbor.

An officer arrived on scene following the 911 call to find the 6-year-old standing in the doorway crying, according to police reports. Reports say the officer went inside and found the 8-month-old on the top of a 14-step staircase.

When the officer found Overfield, she told him that she had put the children to bed and brought flowers and a sympathy card over to a neighbor who had recently lost a family member, according to the police report.

DFACS officials were called to the scene and the children were left in the custody of a family member.
