Rome-Floyd County firefighters quickly extinguished a house fire Thursday at 1245 Chulio Road following a 911 call by a concerned neighbor.

No one was at home during the fire, said Battalion Chief Troy Brock. He said the fire was quelled fairly quickly but caused severe damage to the home’s interior.

Rodger Ginn of 12 Margo Trail was driving home from work around 5 p.m. when he spotted the fire.

“I got to the stop sign on Boyd Valley Road and saw smoke coming out of the bedroom window,” he said.

Ginn called 911 but decided to take some preventive measures of his own while waiting for emergency personnel to arrive on the scene.

He said he drove his work truck up to the burning home and called his son Corey Ginn to the scene. Both men said that, after getting no response to a knock, they kicked down the front door to make sure no one was inside.

“We also cut the gas to the house off, didn’t know if that mattered or not,” said Ginn.

Ginn added that he also turned on a water hose and attempted to put out part of the fire, but by that point “it made no difference.”

Three fire engines and other emergency personnel responded to the scene, blocking traffic both ways near the intersection of Chulio Road and Boyd Valley Road for more than half an hour.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Brock said.
