Senior citizens will once again get a taste of academia during the upcoming Senior Scholars program hosted by Berry College’s Oak Hill and the Martha Berry Museum.

Registration for the program ends Friday for the program which will run from Feb. 19 to April 16. Registration fees are $60 per class.

For 18 years, the Senior Scholars program has been enriching the lives of senior citizens, said event creator Alice Stevens.

“I started it and at the very beginning, it was called Senior’s College,” she said. “I started it because my grandmother lived in Adairsville and she didn’t have any place to go and meet people with similar interests in art and history, so when I worked at Berry, I thought it would be a great idea that we could come up with this program to put like-minded people together.”

Though she’s left the department, Stevens still returns to spearhead the Senior Scholars program each year.

“It’s just something I love,” she said. “I love this program, it really enriches their lives. There are still students that have been attending the entire 18 years. It’s like a big family. And that’s the thing is that they come in and know people and have met new friends because of it.”

Course offerings for this year include “The Federalist Papers and the American Founding,” which will be taught on Tuesdays at 11 a.m. to noon.

Eric Sands, assistant professor of Government and International Studies at Berry, will examine the timely work of the American founding through an exploration of The Federalist Papers, eighty-five essays published in 1787 and 1788 promoting the ratification of the United States Constitution.

Tina Bucher, associate professor of English, rhetoric, and writing, will teach “The Tyranny of Color,” on Tuesdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Bucher will lead a book and film discussion focusing on Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison’s debut novel “The Bluest Eye.” A deeply painful, beautiful book “The Bluest Eye” explores the world of Pecola Breedlove, a young girl who yearns for the images of beauty she sees surrounding her.

Back by popular demand, Berry Benton, a former operational asset profiler for the CIA and Army Ranger, returns to teach about a subject near and dear to his heart. Benton will explore the facets of different personality types and how an individual’s personality affects everything about their daily lives and how they communicate with others. “Becoming a Personality Profiler” will be taught from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
