The Heart of the Community Foundation’s 5th annual Heart of the Community Walk, Ride & Paddle takes place Saturday at 10 a.m. at Heritage Park.

New to this year’s event is a seven-mile mountain bike trail ride, a 12.5-mile road bike trail ride and a one-and-a-half-mile paddle course. The walk course is two miles and runners are welcome on this trail. Participants can choose from any of the trails. Pre-registration is only required for paddlers and can be done at www.coosa.org

The 2013 event honoree is Bob Moore, former owner of Bob’s Cycle Shop. Moore is a heart attack-, heart failure- and heart transplant survivor.

First experiencing issues while on a vacation in 1999, Moore was rushed from a hospital on St. Simon’s Island to St. Vincent hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. where doctors performed quadruple bypass heart surgery.

It wasn’t until 2004 that Moore experienced congestive heart failure and had a defibrillator placed in his chest. In 2005 his cardiologist recommended they check into options for a heart transplant. Moore received a transplant shortly after the process began.

Today, Moore’s heart is doing well and you can typically find him biking, traveling or spending time with his three kids and six grandchildren. He will still be in attendance at the event.

There is no entry fee to participate in the Heart of the Community Walk, Ride and Paddle, however participants are asked to raise funds to turn in at the event.

Participants donating at least $20 to the event will receive a t-shirt. Proceeds will stay in the Rome-Floyd County area to support heart healthy efforts.
