PUBLIC PARTICIPATION in the likely upcoming governmental SPLOST referendum this November is pretty essential. Indeed, that’s why the County Commission appoints a special citizens committee to filter/narrow suggested projects.

So, to drum up interest and perhaps fresh ideas, what occurs? An announcement is distributed on a Friday that the deadline for applying is 5 p.m. the following Monday.

Really? Or was it already known at the time that all the slots were going to be filled with “the usual suspects?”

Because of the political/economic climate, this much-needed extra penny of sales tax is going to be hard enough to sell to voters without seeming to limit the public aspect of the process.
