The Shorter softball team won a pair of games at the North Alabama Invitational on Friday, defeating Southwest Baptist 16-2 and Wisconsin-Parkside 6-0.

The day was highlighted by Shorter’s nine-run fifth-inning rally in the opener.

Amanda Dailey and Maddie Bray each hit two-run homers during the explosion for Shorter (5-1). Former Calhoun star Bre Johnson added a two-run home run in the second game.

A trio of Lady Hawks finished with three hits in the opener: Kayla Cooper, Kendall Johnson, and Gracie Ayers.

Bray got the start on the mound, pitching four innings, striking out two and allowing two runs to earn the win.

Kayla Byrom pitched a scoreless fifth.

The second game saw former Cedartown star Kristen Little pitch a seven-inning complete game while allowing just one hit and striking out 12.

The only hit Little gave up was a one-out single in the fourth, and the only other base runner she allowed was on an error in the sixth.

The Lady Hawks put up three runs in the second when Sarah Corn drove in two with a double and she scored two batters later when Kendall Johnson drove her in.

Dailey added an RBI in game two in the third inning with a sacrifice fly to plate Morris.

Little capped the game by picking up three strikeouts in the final inning.

The Lady Hawks have two games today, facing McKendree at 2 p.m. and Indianapolis at 4 p.m.

SHORTER WOMEN’S LACROSSE: Lady Hawks blanked by Lindenwood

Lindenwood took advantage of a fast start and a strong finish during an 18-0 win over Shorter at Ben Brady Field.

A trio of Lady Lions (1-0) scored three goals each, Shelby Polk, Melissa Smith, and Melissa Menchella.

Polk picked up her first goal less than a minute into the game, and she added another as part of a seven goal first half. Smith added two goals and an assist, while Menchella scored twice and assisted twice in the opening 30 minutes.

The Lady Lions were able to put 32 of the 39 shots on goal, as the Lady Hawks (3-2) picked up 14 saves from the goal-keeping duo of Taylor Moody and Nicole Kube.

Shorter was hurt by 32 turnovers, versus 23 for Lindenwood, with the Lady Lions winning the 44-32 advantage on ground balls.

Christine Hehmeyer needed to make only three saves on the day to earn the shut out, Shorter shot the ball only nine times.

Desiree’ Watson-Isom and Avery Armstrong each picked up four ground balls and won three draw controls to lead Shorter.

Lindenwood was 11-for-12 in clear attempts, while Shorter was 14-for-23.

The Lady Hawks are back in action on February 26 from Emmanuel with a 5 pm start time.
