A Rome car dealership has thousands of dollars in repairs to vehicles and vending machines after a burglary earlier this week, police say.

According to Floyd County Jail and Rome police reports:

Darrell David Hooker, 38, of 2522 Callier Springs Road, is accused of breaking into Ford Lincoln Mercury Quick Lane on Dodd Boulevard on Monday, entering several vehicles and moving one of them. He’s charged with one count each of burglary and theft of an automobile, two counts of theft by taking, six counts of entering an auto and eight counts of second-degree criminal damage to property.

An employee of the dealership noticed two bay doors open when he arrived Monday to work. He also noticed a 2004 Ford Ranger had been moved from inside the building to a fenced-in area on the property.

The employee called police, who arrived and began searching the building’s interior. That’s when someone noticed the lights on the Ranger flashing.

Two officers approached the vehicle with their weapons drawn. They then saw the suspect, later identified as Hooker, inside the Ranger and took him from the vehicle at gunpoint.

Hooker had a flat-head screwdriver, utility knife, two flashlights and 87 cents on him.

“Without being questioned, Mr. Hooker stated all of the items in his pocket he stole from the business and they did not belong to him,” police state in reports.

Police say more than $3,000 in damage was done to six vehicles. Additionally, some vending machines inside the dealership were damaged.
