A few upcoming activities could put residents in need of an alternate route along some county roads in the next few months.

Floyd County Public Works Director Michael Skeen brought up the situation with County Commission Chairman Irwin Bagwell on Tuesday during the public works committee meeting.

“While not all of these require the roads to be closed, there will be traffic delays involved with all of them,” Skeen said.

The Rome Velo Cycling Team will host the second Fouche Gap Road Race on March 30, and the Rome Braves are sponsoring the No Excuses 5/10K on April 20.

According to Skeen, the Rome Velo event will involve traffic being held for several hours along Huffaker Road, Big Texas Valley Road and Fouche Gap Road.

The No Excuses 5/10K will close the Armuchee Connector to inbound traffic for as much as two hours and completely close Three Mile Road.

Skeen said they would work with the Floyd County Police Department to minimize traffic impact and maximize safety while also providing advance notification to residents along the roads through signs and flyers.

Floyd County Facilities Manager Ryan Davis reported that the upgrade to the heating and air conditioning controls at the Rome-Floyd County Library should be complete by spring.

Crews began installation of the new electronically monitored controls in December. “This will be a really good thing to have these controls in there,” Davis said. “It will lead to good energy savings.”

Davis referenced a similar system installed in The Forum and the adjacent judicial building that produced a savings of approximately $216,000 in energy bills per year.

He also said his department is inspecting all of the original windows in the historic Floyd County Courthouse on Fifth Avenue after one of them on the second floor “popped out” during the storms that came through last month.

He said no other issues at county buildings were reported.
