Authorities arrested a Cedartown man Wednesday on accusations he fled last week from a Rome police officer, got in a wreck and then ran from the scene, reports state.

Donald Joseph Bray, 31, of 1457 Doyle Road, faces one count each of reckless driving and driving while his license was revoked and four counts of running a stop sign, Floyd County Jail records state. The charges stem from a Feb. 20 chase down Flannery Street in Rome that ended in Bray and a woman fleeing the scene, Rome police said.

According to reports, a Rome officer was contacted at 8:10 p.m. Feb. 20 by the Rome-Floyd Metro Task Force about a suspect who allegedly had drugs. The suspect, the officer learned, would be in a black Chevrolet S-10 with a missing headlight.

The officer was told to watch for the vehicle on Maple Street. Moments later, a vehicle matching the description drove past. The officer began following the Chevrolet, which soon turned into a nearby gas station and pulled toward the gas pumps.

The officer saw a male driver and female passenger in the vehicle. The driver, later identified in reports as Bray, then turned around to see what was behind him.

The officer began to radio in a traffic stop when the Chevrolet quickly pulled onto Willingham Street and drove off.

The Chevrolet fishtailed as it drove down Willingham, running a stop sign before turning left onto Flannery Street. The officer slowed down because of vehicle and pedestrian traffic and lost distance to the Chevrolet, reports state.

The officer was close to stopping his pursuit when he noticed the Chevrolet was wrecked at a utility pole at Flannery and East 14th streets.

Its doors were open and the two occupants were gone, records show.

Police say they then brought “Axle,” a K9 dog, to the scene. Axle sniffed his way to a nearby home, where they found the woman who fled the suspect’s car.

The woman, who is not named in reports, told police the Chevrolet’s driver was Bray.

Police then took out warrants on Bray, records state.
