Jarell Calvin Robinson, 24, of 159 Boundary St., faces felony charges of fleeing or attempting to elude and possession of a firearm by a felon. He faces misdemeanor charges of DUI, driving with a suspended license, driving with suspended registration, reckless driving and having an open container, officials said.
According to reports, the driver of a green Toyota Corolla, later identified as Robinson, passed an officer about 2 a.m. Friday on Turner McCall Boulevard. The driver then accelerated, leading the officer to use a radar on the Corolla and clocking it at 58 mph in a 35-mph zone.
The officer began following the Corolla, catching up with it at Turner McCall and Broad Street. He tried to stop the other vehicle, which instead turned into the Chili’s parking lot, reports state.
Officials say the suspect drove recklessly through the lot, eventually colliding with a curb and going airborne. The Corolla landed on Riverbend and drove slightly farther before its engine seized.
The driver exited the Corolla, and the officer approached with his weapon drawn. The driver refused a breath test, cursed and told the officer to “take me on to jail,” records state.
A search of the Corolla revealed an open container and a loaded .38-caliber handgun, officials said.
