In the bottom of the fifth inning of a Division III baseball game between Berry College and Hendrix, Berry pitcher Levi Austin took an unconventional approach to preventing a run.

Where some pitchers might have tried not throwing wild pitches with a runner on third, and others might have tried covering the plate after throwing a wild pitch, Austin instead went with the heretofore untested method of sprinting off the mound toward the advancing runner and body-checking him to the ground before he could reach home plate. And it would have worked if weren't for that meddling umpire!

You might guess that the incident stemmed from mounting frustration on Austin's part, perhaps due to whatever loaded the bases in the first place. But in fact, according to the box score the batter – Matthew Simmons – was only the second hitter Austin faced in the game. The runner at third wasn't even his responsibility.

Is there even such a thing as a Well-Earned Run Average?

I was surprised that no one had commended the Hendrix player for not retaliating. This could have escalated and become much worse had he punched Austin in response. He is the real man and sportsman in this. He is obviously shocked and upset but controls himself quite admirably.

Well said but then again when do we focus on positive behavior in the media?

An athlete performs a violent act against someone and faces no consequences? How is that news? Sounds like he is mimicking professional athletes.

He's been suspended for three games and my lose any academic aid that he might have and could be expelled from school.

If a professional baseball player pulled this move he could expect to take a few punches or be spiked and/or hit with a pitch later in the game or a future game since he would most likely be ejected from the game.

Oh Dalton

Your the type to throw everyone in Jail.

My goodness, let the coaches sort it out. Let the League make an eligibility ruling, and mind your own business. People like you think everything is your business.....

Your the perfect poster boy for saying something stupid.

It's "you're" NOT "Your". And you did it twice so it's ignorance, not a typo.

Looks like I have a stalker now.

That type of act could result in criminal charges for assault since it's not even close to being part of the game of baseball.

Maybe he should sit on the bench for the rest of the month and lose his scholarship money if he can't control himself the rest of the season.

He needs some counseling on how to control his emotions and anger in the games also before he is allowed back in the lineup.

Division III schools can't give athletic scholarships.

"Division I and II schools offer athletic scholarships. Division III schools offer academic scholarships only. NCAA members provide more than $1.5 billion in athletics scholarships annually."

I didn't know that Phil. I know that years ago, one of the pitchers told me that only pitchers were on full scholarship and other players were on partial scholarship. If he is on an academic scholarship or not on academic scholarship, he could still be kicked out of school or lose academic aid for violation of school policy. I heard that he's been suspended for three games. I don't know if that's the next three of his spots in the pitching rotation or just the next three games.

Maybe he's trying to get the attention of the football coach? Such sportsmanship. Martha would be proud.

No, Martha would be on the warpath. She was a formidable woman with very strong opinions on proper behavior.

This pitcher would be in real hot water.
