A Roman told authorities this week that her tax preparer made off with her refund worth close to $4,500, Floyd County police said.

According to reports, she told officers Tuesday that the person who prepared her taxes took her refund check and deposited it in a Florida bank account. The woman gave the tax preparer the opportunity to fix the problem, but he refused.

Police say they told the woman to contact the IRS.

Why can't LEO go over to the tax preparer for questioning?

Wouldn't it be about the same as someone stealing a refund check from a mailbox? Really? The IRS? Do they know how long that will take? Meanwhile, the preparer can do this to others. This sounds odd to me. I need some enlightenment to understand how a "known" person could get away with something like this.

I had a similar problem decades ago. Some government agency intercepted my IRS refund back when they mailed refund checks instead of direct deposit. It was mistaken identity which I cleared up after a couple of weeks but the IRS told me that I would have to deal with the other government agency to get my money back. Evidently taking someone's IRS refund either by fraud, theft, or mistake seems to have government agencies always pointing at each other. Nobody wants to help. Common sense does not apply when dealing with the government.
