For the second day in a row, the Berry softball team had to settle for a split against Rhodes College.

After winning the opener of Sunday’s doubleheader, 5-1, the Lady Vikings dropped the second game, 2-1, at Ford Field.

The teams also split Saturday’s doubleheader, with Berry winning the opener, 2-1, but falling in the nightcap, 5-4, in eight innings.

Berry is now 10-6 and 2-2 in the Southern Athletic Association. Rhodes is 8-6, 2-2.

In the first game on Sunday, Berry’s Abby Daniels went 2-for-2 with a solo homer — the first long ball of the season for the Lady Vikes. Teammate Jessica Washington went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Caillee Shamoun pitched a three-hitter and improved to 6-2 on the year. She did not allow an earned run in the win.

Berry pitcher Allison Coronado (1-2) took the hard-luck loss in the nightcap. She allowed one run in the third inning, and five hits overall.

Berry scored its run in the fifth inning when Daniels, who finished 2-for-4, had an RBI single.

Berry’s Kristen Stoll finished 4-for-4 with a triple.

Berry travels to Sewanee for two SAA doubleheaders next weekend.

SHORTER BASEBALL:

Hawks complete sweep of Union

Stuart Charleston tossed another complete game, this time scattering eight hits and fanning six over nine innings on Sunday.

His strong outing helped Shorter complete the weekend sweep of Gulf South Conference rival Union University with a 4-2 win on Sunday at the Ledbetter Complex.

The win, Shorter’s third straight, improves the Hawks to 5-13 overall and 4-2 in the GSC. Union, which lost two one-run games to the Hawks on Saturday, fell to 3-12 overall and 0-6 in the league.

In Sunday’s series finale, Shorter rallied from an early one-run deficit.

Union pushed a run across in the top of the first courtesy of a Jim Martin RBI single, but was held in check by Charleston from that point until the eighth.

The Hawks tied the game in the second on Jacob Forrest’s RBI single to left that plated Walker Borneman then took a 3-1 lead on Dustin Evans’ two-out, two-run single in the fourth that scored Chad Ikerd and Borneman.

Darius Jennings extended Shorter’s lead to 4-1 in the sixth with another two-out, RBI knock, this a single to center that brought Borneman across for the third time in the game.

Charleston gave up an RBI double in the eighth, but quickly snuffed out any threat by striking out Pierson Waring to end the inning.

He worked a perfect ninth to earn his third win of the season, improving his record to 3-2.

Five different Hawks accounted for Shorter’s five hits, with Borneman going 1-for-1 with two walks and the three runs scored. Cal Hardie went 1-for-4 with a stolen base for the Hawks. All five of Shorter’s hits were singles.

The Hawks are on the road on Tuesday, traveling to Albany State for a non-conference doubleheader.
