Floyd County Public Works released the following information today about limb and storm debris pickup after Monday evening's storm:

Floyd County’s limb and brush/storm debris pickup policy was altered several years ago due to budget cuts. There does not appear to be enough damage from the Storm Event on Monday, March 18 to be eligible for state or federal assistance. The County will clear the public rights of way directly after the

storm in order to get roads open.

After roads are cleared, property owners who live on a county road have several options to deal with their storm debris: they may, after placing their storm debris on their right of

way, pay the County to haul it off of the right of way; they may pay a private contractor to haul it off their private property, or they may pile their debris and acquire a burn permit.

The County’s limb and brush removal policy is one free 3 cubic yard (pickup truck) load every 90 days, and $100 for a 10 cubic yard (dump truck) or $150 for a 22 cubic yard load. The County does not pick up stumps.

To acquire a burn permit, parties should contact the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) prior to conducting the burn. GFC has an online permitting system at www.gatrees.org/OnlinePermits/.

A burn permit may also be obtained by calling 1-877-OK2-BURN. Only vegetative debris, such as trees, brush, and stumps, resulting from storm damage should be burned.

Residents along SR101 (state right of way) have a couple of options; pay a private hauler or obtain a burn permit. The County does not pick up debris on state right of way. Do not put debris on state right of way. Residents can take debris to the Walker Mountain Landfill for a fee. For landfill hours and rates, please call 706-291-4512.

Additional information can be obtained by calling Floyd County Public Works at 706-236-2495.

The free phone program--1984,Ronald Reagan, Republican

Expanded to free cell phones--2008,George W. Bush,Republican

Zero tax dollars go to free phones, by the way. And Obama has not changed the Republican-born program one iota.

Free Public Education for Undocumented Children--1982, Ronald Reagan, Republican

Free emergency treatment at hospitals that accept govt. funding--1986, Ronald Reagan, Republican

GOP requires IDs, but not IQs to vote. Plus a very short memory (we will accept the onset of dementia.) Oh, and Fox News (or Rush Limbaugh, if you don't have an ObamaTV).

Gapital C (aka Mip) You hit the nail on the head there FR.

Check your phone bill (land line or cell)–government fees, taxes and surcharges. That is what is paying for the free phones. A fee is a tax and a tax is a fee.

No one begrudges the idea of a free basic phone with 250 minutes per month free for those who need a cell phone for emergencies and family contact but cannot afford it, butTedb3rd is correct in his idea of how they are being misused. The phone and 250 minutes are free but recipients are offered the option of paying for additional plans by participating companies and the additional plans are just as expensive as regular cell phone service providers. If they can afford the expensive plans - - -

A 5-day old article?? LOL

WOW Republicans really did use to be in touch with the XX% (I dare not say 47). Proof positive you got to give free stuff for votes.

GOP you can get back into this thing if you find something new to give free. Maybe cars are next.

eyefly,

If you think that the only reason Republicans are losing is because of what they don't "give away," you likely need to spend some time catching up on the ol' trickle down theory and its lack of results.

We're getting a little long in the tooth if we have to refer back to the Reagan era for an influential president, wouldn't you say?

How about this? Stop trying to give every break possible to the rich, being intolerant sexually and racially, and learn to negotiate like adults.

...of course, free cars wouldn't hurt.

And this folks, is why this country is in the shape it's in. I've heard 1(yes that's right, ONE!) comment that was focused on what should be happening. LmKeith5...that's what people should be focusing on. Not only local government, but everybody in general only focuses on "Me". "Why do I have to pay for this that'll benefit somebody else?" "What's in this for ME?". This could go on and on, but were the men and women that sacrificed their lives to make this country one of the best in the world acting selfishly and only thinking about what was in it for them? I think not. I think people like my grandfather that put his life on the line in WW2 would be ashamed to see the selfishness of the majority of the general population. We can all complain about how bad this place is becoming. But it's not going to get any better until we all start thinking "How can I make this a better place?". It took us all to bring this country to where it is now, and it will take us ALL to make it what we want it to be.

So, are you volunteering your time and labor, or just giving a speech? I have stumps from the blizzard of '93......

Clearly you didn't read my comment or just have blatant disregard for other people in need. I am actually volunteering my time and labor. I'm even taking my children to help to teach them to help those in need. Your response is a clear example of what I was saying with the "Me" era. If you have had stumps in your yard since 1993, obviously you aren't too concerned with them. Those stumps aren't laying on your roof, damaged your home, or pose a possible hazard for anybody's safety. I challenge you to do one of two things this weekend. Either finally take care of those stumps you have been complaining about, or take the time to ride around to the areas heavily affected and just ask someone if you could help them. I bet you won't do either.

I can't accept your challenge. At 76 years of age , I am not much help for strenuous labor. Eyesight won't allow me to drive around, either. Maybe forty years ago I could accept.

Well then you my friend, above all others, should understand the point I was making. Would you not agree that this country is not running like it was 40 years ago? Have you not seen the decline of "helping thy neighbor"? I would give the shirt off my back to someone in need. But very few would do that these days.

coosatown, Trelicious The issue the article is addressing is the hauling off of gathered debris NOT raking a yard. The city picks up yard debris and grinds it into mulch which they sell at a good price. Since the county doesn't pick up garbage curbside either, maybe the private contractors that pickup in those areas will offer the service for a fee.

I predict quite a few large fires in the southern end of the county over the next few weeks. Considering that Floyd County has a vast labor pool at the prison revenue camp- i mean prison work camp they could help out along with volunteers. This is what happened in neighboring counties in past 2 years worth of tornado's so why Floyd can't work it out is well..Floyd.. same reason City of Rome tightened up the fiscal belt 2 to 3 yrs ago in small increments and Floyd did a knee-jerk reaction. Same mentality. Let's have a SPLOST vote on misc. b.s. fund. The land of the never ending SPLOST.

Local GOP leaders threw us in the briar patch again!

For the time being, assume that you, I and everyone who you and I care about is screwed. Congratulations.

tre(e) always a "just a thought" backbencher. Public water, electric, gas and sewer lines pass through private property.

You could pull your fat kids away from the ipad and have them clean up your own property. I don't feel like paying for your downed pine trees. I don't even want to pay for police and fire protection or roads. That's why I live in Floyd County.

Is there anywhere to volunteer to help with the clean up?

Not being able to pick up debris is just not right. The county should at least be able to schedule one day for debris pickup. If you cant do it that day, then its up to you to get it deposed of properly.

Why should the county (taxpayers) pay for cleaning privately owned property? I still have stumps from the blizzard of '93. Can I move to the top of the list? Get your chainsaw, rake and wheelbarrow in good working order.

Sooo...... where does our tax money goes?
Trelicious
|
March 19, 2013
The government should keep the public roads clear of trees and limbs and not concern itself with picking up trees that fall on private property. Take some personal responsibility for your own property and quit telling government that you don't want to be taxed but also want them to keep trees and limbs out of your yard. You can't pay for a pothole government and expect white glove service. Just a thought.

I second Trelicious. We can't use the same money over and over again to pay for everything. It's common sense.

And we can't just keep the cost off the books, like Bush did for the Iraq War.

Where does the tax money go? It goes for free cell phones (so drug addicts can arrange pickups) and free healthcare (so said drug addicts can get HIV treatment after getting it from dirty needle), and for illegal alien kids to get an education in a RIF-overcrowded classroom. It's no secret... Just not politically correct to call it for what it is. When there's no money left, you have to cut something... And ain't nobody gonna' vote democrat they take yo' phone away! And ain't nobody gonna' limit education to legal citizens because they'll grow up to be unregistered voters that vote... And their parents do that now.
