Among the tour Friday was former University of Georgia Bulldogs head coach Vince Dooley, who besides being a veteran, is also a student of Civil War history.
Dooley, who has been to Rome a number of times in the past, said his last few trips to the area have been specifically about seeing Civil War sites.
“I came here on the tour four years ago,” he said. “It’s nice to always get to come to this area.”
Charlie Crawford, president of the GBA, said yearly tours visit sites where federal and Confederate soldiers faced one another.
This weekend’s trip is specifically focused on the campaign that stretched from September to November of 1864 when Union Gen. William T. Sherman chased Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood around the area. The tour is being led by Ed Bearss, National Park Service chief historian emeritus.
“Because there are so many sites in Georgia, we’re only able to cover so much ground,” he said. “So we’re doing what would be a month-long tour in a weekend.”
The tour covers sites in Palmetto, Cave Spring, Rome, Resaca, Dalton, Kingston, Allatoona Pass, Gaylesville, Ala., and Cedar Bluff, Ala.
